There is a variety of “Special Days” in the US calendar. There were religious holidays, Federal holidays, State holidays, and local holidays. The best ones were the Hallmark Holidays! As I continued with my quest, it became apparent to me, that were I to list them all, they would exceed 365 days in a year! Between New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve, there are a lot of “Special Days”.
New Year’s Day is completely overshadowed by its previous day. New Year’s Eve is the largest party day. The arrival of the New Year is celebrated at the stroke of midnight to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne”, which means “Old Long Since”. Loosely translated as “The Good Old Days”, it is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788. It is a rare person who knows at least the first few words of the most popular song played at the onset of the New Year.
Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. On this day, Meteorologists are temporarily cast aside, and America looks toward a
Groundhog as their weather forecaster. Legend has it that if Phil Punxsutawney, the groundhog, emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, it predicts six more weeks of winter. What is impressive about this is the fact, that everyone has a child in them, wanting to fantasize.
Candy companies officially endorse certain holidays. It begins with Valentine’s Day, followed by the Easter Bunny with Candy in its basket, and culminates with Halloween. The third Saturday of October is called the “Sweetest Day”. It is said to have been started in Cleveland, Ohio, by an employee of a candy company who distributed candy to the underprivileged children. I hope his bonus did not have a statute of limitations.
Respect to the country and its people is shown on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Flag Day, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Independence Day, Martin Luther King Jr, Day, Columbus Day, and Presidents Day.
